IRC Chat

What is it?

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is the grand-daddy of all instant messaging protocols. In the past it was more difficult to set up, but recently it has been integrated into several comprehensive IM programs and is nearly as easy to use as other chat protocols.

Where is it?

The PortableApps IRC channel #portableapps is hosted on irc.freenode.net. Although this channel is currently unofficial, it may eventually become supported.

Who is it for?

The #portableapps channel is mainly for developers seeking help or input in their work at developing PortableApps, but if you have any support questions, or would just like to chat, you're welcome here too.

How do I connect?

Instructions for several PortableApps.com packaged IM clients is available here. It is reccomended that you use Pidgin, but you can also use Miranda IM, Chatzilla, and X-Chat, to name a few clients.

  • You can try a direct link, if you already have a client installed locally.
  • Or, you can use an online client, such as Mibbit, or the Freenode Java Applet.
    • To access the IRC channel from Mibbit, type portableapps into the search box and click on the result, or usethis direct link IRC channel with Mibbit.
    • To access the IRC channel from the PJIRC, type your nick in, and put #portableapps as the channel, or use this direct link.
